The Universal Hymn Book, 1885

From Oremus Hymnal

As far as I have been able to find out, this was another text-only effort. Many of the translations in this volume were rather unusual and not many have survived. I have currently misplaced my copy of it, so any peculiar texts to this hymnal will not be added right away. (Steve Benner)
Hymns for Sundays
O day of rest and gladness
This is the day the light was made
This is the day the Lord hath made
Great God, what do I see and hear
Lord, grant to us thy heavenly grace
In the midst of gloom and darkness
The advent of our King
Who is this? the long-expected
How precious is the book divine
Praise the Lord, rejoice ye Gentiles
Awake, awake, ye sons of earth
Bow down thine ear, almighty Lord
Lo, he comes, whom every nation
Rejoice, the Lord is King
On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry
Shadow of a mighty rock
Glory be to God on high, love to man
Angels, from the realms of glory
Set thine house in order
O God, the Rock of Ages
Within the Father's house
The Savior comes; no outward pomp
Glory be to thee, O Lord
My God, how wonderful thou art
O Lord of health and life, what tongue can tell
Unworthy though I be
Thee we adore, almighty Lord
Fierce was the storm of wind
Lord, send thy Spirit from above
Not by thy mighty hand
Blessed hope, that we the fallen
The Son of Man shall come
Songs of thankfulness and praise
Alleluia, song of gladness
Lo, like a bride in pure array
There shall be no more death
Jerusalem, my happy home
Almighty God, thy word is cast
How graciously the Lord invites
Christian, be thou content
Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost
Forty days and forty nights
O Lord and Bishop of our souls
Lord, when to thee this gentile came
This is the house of God
Walk in the light: so shalt thou know
O God most high, the soul that knows
The sun is sinking in the west
Thou who when the weary thousands
Where high the heavenly temple stands
The royal banners forward go
O thou, who in the form of God
All glory, laud, and honor
Ride on, ride on in majesty
At the Lamb's high feast we sing
Come ye, lift your joyous voices
Jesus Christ is risen today
Alleluia, Alleluia, hearts to heaven and voices raise
Christ is risen, ere the sun
Near the tomb where Christ hath been
O Savior, who didst come
We saw thee not when thou didst come
When Israel by divine command
Shepherd of the ransomed flock
O King of kings, thy blessing shed
How sweet the hour of closing day
Keep thou my heart that it may ne'er
Pour down thy Spirit, gracious Lord
Lord, in thy name thy servants plead
There is a land of pure delight
O Christ, thou hast ascended
Now is Christ's work of mercy
Thou who camest from above
Lord of the Church, we humbly pray
When God of old came down from heaven
Birthday of the Church of Christ
Come, Holy Spirit, come, send forth thy heavenly ray
Bright the vision that delighted
Maker, Upholder, Ruler, thee
Holy Father, hear my cry
God Almighty, who hast given
Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty
Come, let us join our cheerful songs
Three in One, and One in Three
Our God is love, O sweetly sing
O Love that casts out fear
Awake our zeal, awake our love
Room for the wanderer, room
O wondrous love that he whose bliss
Speak, for thy servant heareth
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah
Hark to the words of him like whom
Jesus, Lord, we look to thee
The Galilean fishers toil
A living stream as crystal clear
O ye, your Savior's Name who bear
O Father of the worlds supreme
O God of Bethel, by whose hand
Our days are but a shadow
Blessed are the sons of God
Rock of ages, cleft for me
Alas, what dangers hourly rise
When near Jerusalem of old
Lord of the Sabbath, hear us pray
To me, a sinner, chief of all
Does one small voice within thy soul
Almighty God, this truth we own
Now in a song of grateful praise
How beauteous are their feet
Father of mercies, send thy grace
Holy Spirit, in my breast
Not by the martyr's death alone
We sing the praise of him who died
O Lord, how happy should we be
The saints on earth and those above
O Savior, who at Nain's gate
The Church's one foundation
Great Father of our race
Ye servants of the Lord
To God the only wise
Holy Ghost, thou Light Divine
O that the Lord would guide my ways
Time is earnest, passing by
Thou who hast called us by thy word
Soldiers of Christ, arise
The simple trust that can confide
How shall I pray, O Lord, to thee
Lord, thine apostle asked of old
Return, O wanderer, return
Citizens of heaven
Now thank we all our God
Saints die and we should gently weep
We all, O God, unrighteous are
Come, thou long-expected Jesus

Hymns for Holy Days
O Jesus, our redeeming Lord
Jesus calls us! o'er the tumult
O thou, who didst with love untold
Thou art the way: to thee alone
Hark, the herald angels sing
Glory be to God on high, peace on earth
All praise to thee, eternal Lord
Ye faithful, approach ye
The martyr's crown is won today
The Son of God goes forth to war
O thou, who gav'st thy servant grace
An exile for the faith
All praise to thee, O Lord
Unlike the cry of infancy
O happy day, when first was poured
With thee, O Lord, begins the year
Long time ago a wondrous star
In the far-off eastern clime
The great Apostle called by grace
Christ, thy power is man's salvation
Blest are the pure in heart
O Zion, open wide thy gates
The highest and the holiest place
Bishop of the souls of men
Praise we the Lord this day
Jesus, Name of wondrous love
Have mercy, Lord, on me
Have mercy, Lord, O Lord, forgive
In sorrow and distress
Lord, in this thy mercy's day
Jesus gentle, Jesus sweet
Who is this that comes from Edom
Christian, seek not yet repose
O blessed Savior, is thy love
O what unbounded zeal and love
Our blest Redeemer, ere he breathed
In the hour of trial
Remember me: show forth my death
Heavy and dark the clouds o'erhung
For ever here my rest shall be
Jesus is toiling patiently
Behold the Lamb of God
Ye that pass by, behold the Man
Shades of night are slowly falling
Come and deck the grave with flowers
The sepulchre is holding
The deed is done, ended the strife
Tis finished all, our souls to win
Awake, arise, and sing
Jesus lives! thy terrors now
Hark, my soul! it is the Lord
We praise thy grace, O Savior
Christ the Lion of Royal Judah
Blest be, O Lord, the grace of love
We know thee, Lord, the eternal Way
Sing to the Lord of bounty
Rise, Christian! Christ arose
Hail the day that sees him rise
On Olivet a little band
Spirit divine, attend our prayers
My God, what wondrous love was thine
Come, Holy Spirit, come; let thy bright beams arise
Our God is love, and all his saints
Buried in heathen darkness lay
Brightly did the light divine
The heavenly King must come
O heavenly Father, cleanse our lips
Creator of the rolling flood
O Rock of ages, one Foundation
We praise thy name, O Lord most high
Today, O Lord, the holy James
The choirs of ransomed Israel
Blessed are they whose hearts are pure
Ye saints, in blest communion
Arise and follow me
O Lord, thy presence is revealed
Around the throne of God a band
O Lord of Life and Light and Love
Come, ye sinners, poor and needy
Let the Church of God rejoice
O Jesus, O Redeemer
When thou, O Lord, didst send the twelve
How bright these glorious spirits shine
O praise the Lord for sweet and glad communion
Hark, the sound of holy voices
Blest are the dead that in the Lord are sleeping
O Christ, the Father's mirrored light
Resting within the place that knows no dangers
The leaders of the Church of Christ
O Christ, thy soldier's crown

Ere the waning light decay
Father of light, whose love and power
Father, thou hast made the day
God be merciful and love us
God the Father, be thou near
God who madest earth and heaven
Holy Father, cheer our way
Lighten our darkness, Lord, we need thy Light
Now the solemn shadows darken
Savior, abide with us
Savior, breathe an evening blessing
Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear
Sweet Savior, bless us ere we go
The evening's shadowy dimness
The day is past and over
The radiant morn hath passed away
Yet one more day is well-nigh flown
Be with us all for evermore
