The Hymnal 1916 (US)

From Oremus Hymnal

Jump to: navigation, search

This was approved by the 1916 General Convention and was the first US hymnal to include tunes. At the subsequent (1919) Convention, an alternative hymnal edited by Charles Hutchins was tacitly approved (or at least not found to be against the authorization of the 1916 Hymnal). However, the authorization given the official 1916 Hymnal eventually outweighed the previous popularity of Hutchins' work. This Hymnal was first published as The New Hymnal, but when it became necessary to revise it in 1933 to make the service music conform to the rubrics of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, it became known simply as The Hymnal.

I. DAILY PRAYER

Morning
New every morning is the love
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Come, my soul, thou must be waking
Christ, whose glory fills the skies
Now that the sun is gleaming bright
My Father, for another night
Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go
Come, Holy Ghost, who ever One

Noon
Blest are the moments, doubly blest
Behold us, Lord, a little space

Evening
O Trinity of blessed Light
O Brightness of the immortal Father's face
The day is gently sinking to a close
The radiant morn hath passed away
Through the day thy love has spared us
Holy Father, cheer our way
The sun is sinking fast
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide
Softly now the light of day
Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear
The day is past and gone
The shadows of the evening hours
The day is past and over
Savior, breathe an evening blessing
All praise to thee, my God, this night
God, that madest earth and heaven
Now from the altar of my heart
Before the ending of the day
The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended
As now the sun's declining rays
Tarry with me, O my Savior

Through the Week
From every stormy wind that blows
O help us, Lord! each hour of need
Inspirer and hearer of prayer
While thee I seek, protecting Power
Lord, for tomorrow and its needs
When morning gilds the skies
Three in One, and One in Three
Savior, when night involves the skies
O Light, whose beams illumine all
Lord of mercy and of might
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah

The Lord's Day
O day of rest and gladness
Sweet is the work, my God, my King
This is the day of light!
Safely through another week
On this day, the first of days
O Savior, bless us ere we go
Our day of praise is done
