The Church Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, 1892 The process for authorizing Episcopal hymnals requires reading at two successive General Conventions; the Revised and Enlarged Hymnal was first read at the 1889 convention and some editions carry copyrights from 1889 (or even 1888).
The 1892 Hymnal existed in six music editions (all have been indexed on this site). General Convention authorized only the words of the hymnal, leaving it up to publishers to pair texts and tunes.
a. The Church Hymnal, 1892 (Hutchins) by the Rev. Dr. Charles L. Hutchins, Rector of Grace Church, Medford, Massachusetts. Appeared in 1894. This was the most widely used of the musical editions.
b. The Church Hymnal, 1892 (Tucker & Rousseau) by the Rev. Dr. J. Ireland Tucker, Rector, and William W. Rousseau, Organist, of the Church of the Holy Cross, Troy, New York, in 1894. This was the second most popular edition.
c. The Church Hymnal, 1892 (Messiter) by Arthur H. Messiter, organist of Trinity Church, New York City, in 1893.
d. The Church Hymnal, 1892 (Darlington) by James H. Darlington, then Rector of Christ Church, Brooklyn, New York. Published in 1897 and was a smaller edition, with mostly only one tune for each hymn and designed for congregational use. (Most people used words-only editions of the Hymnal until after World War II).
e. The Church Hymnal, 1892 (Parker) by Horatio Parker in 1903. Contains many of his choir-tunes. Much of this work was taken up in the 1916 Hymnal. (Parker served on the Commission which created that hymnal.)
f. The Church Hymnal, 1892 (Helfenstein) by James M. Helfenstein, organist of Grace Church, New York City, in 1909 and published with the title Grace Church Hymnal.

I. Daily Prayer

Morning

Come, my soul, thou must be waking
Every morning mercies new
O Jesus, crucified for man

Evening
O Brightness of the immortal Father's face
The day is gently sinking to a close

Holy Father, cheer our way
The sun is sinking fast
Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide
Softly now the light of day
At even, ere the sun was set
The shadows of the evening hours
The day is past and over
Savior, breathe an evening blessing
All praise to thee, my God, this night
God, that madest earth and heaven
Now from the altar of my heart
Before the ending of the day
Sweet Savior, bless us ere we go
Our day of praise is done

The Lord's Day

Great Shepherd of the sheep
Lord, thy children guide and keep
Savior, like a shepherd lead us
Grant us, O our heavenly Father
O Lord, the Holy Innocents
Jesus, gentlest Savior
In the vineyard of our Father
God in heaven, hear our singing!

Lay Helpers
O brothers, lift your voices
Christ for the world we sing
Soldiers of the Cross, arise
Stand up, stand up for Jesus
Work, for the night is coming
Go, labor on; spend, and be spent
O thou, before whose presence
Lord, speak to me, that I may speak

Teachers
Shine thou upon us, Lord

Guilds or Friendly Societies
Through him who all our sickness felt

Parochial Missions
Lord, I hear of showers of blessing
Today thy mercy calls us
When at thy footstool, Lord, I bend
Jesus Christ is passing by
There is a fountain filled with blood
Only one prayer today
Turned by thy grace, I look within
The Spirit, in our hearts
Jesus, and shall it ever be
Ashamed of thee, O dearest Lord
Hark, my soul! it is the Lord
Jesus, my Lord, my God, my all
I need thee, precious Jesus
I need thee every hour
I could not do without thee
Thy life was given for me
I lay my sins on Jesus
Just as I am, without one plea
Love of Jesus, all divine
Lo, the voice of Jesus
When the weary, seeking rest
O Holy Savior, Friend unseen
Jesus, merciful and mild
O the bitter shame and sorrow
Prince of Peace, control my will
Lord Jesus, think on me
O Jesus, I have promised
He leadeth me! O blessed thought
Glory be to God the Father
Revive thy work, O Lord
Call them in! the poor, the wretched
Onward, Christian! though the region
Days and moments quickly flying
My hope is built on nothing less
I'm but a stranger here

For the Sick and Afflicted
My God, I thank thee, who hast made
Jesus, thy boundless love to me
My times are in thy hand
O Love divine, that stooped to share
Though faint, yet pursuing
We would see Jesus; for the shadows lengthen
Thou knowest, Lord, the weariness and sorrow
With tearful eyes I look around
Thy way, not mine, O Lord
I do not ask, O Lord that life may be
My Jesus, as thou wilt
Lord Jesus, by thy Passion
How firm a foundation
Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem

Home and Personal Use
When streaming from the eastern skies
Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go
My Father, for another night
Savior, when night involves the skies
[[Tarry with me, O my Savior ]]
Inspirer and hearer of prayer
Great God, to thee my evening song
The day is past and gone
Through the day thy love has spared us
Hear our prayer, O heavenly Father
To Zion's hill I lift my eyes
Lord, for ever at thy side
Jesus, my strength, my hope
Come, my soul, thy suit prepare
Approach, my soul, the mercy-seat
My God, I love thee; not because
More love to thee, O Christ
No change of time shall ever shock
Breast the wave, Christian
When all thy mercies, O my God
Thou hidden love of God, whose height
The Lord my pasture shall prepare
O for a closer walk with God
As pants the hart for cooling streams
Let me with light and truth be blest
O thou, from whom all goodness flows
My spirit on thy care
Lord, it belongs not to my care
Jesus, I live to thee
My God, my Father, while I stray
Whate’er my God ordains is right
Sovereign Ruler of the skies
Father, whate’er of earthly bliss
While thee I seek, protecting Power
Blest be the tie that binds
I heard the voice of Jesus say
Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin
For ever with the Lord
One sweetly solemn thought
As when the weary traveler gains
There is a land of pure delight
There is a blessed home
