The Church Hymnal (US), 1871-1874
From Oremus Hymnal
The process for authorizing what was to become the 1874 Episcopal Church Hymnal was arduous; this was the first Episcopal Hymnal not to be required to be bound with the Prayer Book. Also, the English hymn explosion after the appearance of Hymns Ancient & Modern ten years earlier had significantly altered the landscape of Anglican hymnody.
The 1874 General Convention modified the previously approved 1871 hymnal by adding 12 hymns, substituting sixteen for others and changing the texts of many others.
The 1871-1874 Hymnal existed in at least five editions. General Convention authorized only the words of the hymnal, leaving it up to publishers to pair texts and tunes. I have indexed four of these editions:
a. The Church Hymnal, 1871 (Hall & Whiteley) by the Rev. Dr. Charles Henry Hall, Rector, and S.B. Whiteley, Organist]], of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn. I have indexed the 1871 edition of this (and I'm not sure there ever was an edition printed to match the changes made in 1874).
b. The Church Hymnal, 1874 (Hutchins) by the Rev. Dr. Charles L. Hutchins, Rector of Grace Church, Medford, Massachusetts. Dr. Hutchins' edition included extra hymns appended at the end, but not authorized by General Convention. Hutchins went on to edit editions of the 1892 and 1916 Hymnals.
c. The Church Hymnal, 1874 (Goodrich & Gilbert) by the Rev. Dr. A.B. Goodrich, Rector of Calvary Church, Utica, New York, and Dr. Walter B. Gilbert, Organist of Trinity Chapel, Trinity Parish, New York City. Appeared in 1875.
d. The Church Hymnal, 1874 (Tucker & Rousseau) by the Rev. Dr. J. Ireland Tucker, Rector, and William W. Rousseau, Organist, of the Church of the Holy Cross, Troy, New York, in 1875. Tucker and Rousseau also issued an edition of the 1892 Hymnal.
The final edition was by James Pearce, organist of St. Mark's Church in Philadelphia. As this book only gave tunes for selected hymns, and was essentially meant as an alternative tune book for the use of organists, I have chosen not to include it here.

020 Hark, what mean those holy voices
021 Christians, awake! salute the happy morn
022 It came upon the midnight clear

552 Forth to the fight, ye ransomed
553 Soldiers of the Captain
554 Come, ye faithful, raise the strain
555 On our way rejoicing
556 There is sound of rejoicing
557 Savior, blessed Savior
558 Palms of glory, raiment bright
559 O happy band of pilgrims
560 Rejoice, ye pure in heart
561 See the Conqueror mounts in triumph
562 At the Name of Jesus
563 Welcome, happy morning
