Hymns Ancient & Modern, New Edition, 1904

From Oremus Hymnal

Jump to: navigation, search

After the initial success of the 1861 original edition , the editors of Hymns Ancient & Modern published the second edition in 1875. This became the most successful hymnal in the Church of England for more than 75 years and is still in print today. The edition indexed on this page was an attempt to introduce an historically more accurate new edition (and with few pieces of Victoriana), but it failed to sell and was the subject of much derision in the press of its day. This failure is due largely to the very success the previous 2ndedition had found.
