Lyrics
Stennett's original text, reconstructed
Another six days’ work is done
another Sabbath is begun;
return, my soul, unto thy rest,
revere the day thy God hath blest.
Come, praise the Lord, whose love assigns
so sweet a rest to weary minds;
provides an antepast of heaven
and gives this day the food of seven.
O that our thoughts and words may rise
as incense to propitious skies!
And fetch from heaven that sweet repose
which none but he that feels it knows.
This heavenly calm within the breast
is the dear pledge of glorious rest,
which for the Church of God remains,
the end of cares, the end of pains.
With joy, great God, thy works we view,
in various scenes, both old and new;
with praise we think on mercies past,
with hope we future pleasure taste.
In holy duties thus the day,
in holy pleasures melt away;
how sweet a Sabbath thus to spend,
in hope of one that ne’er shall end.
The Episcopal Version of 1874
Another six days’ work is done
another Lord's day has begun;
return, my soul, enjoy thy rest,
revere the hours thy God hath blest.
This day may our devotion rise
as grateful incense to the skies;
and heaven that sweet repose bestow,
which none but they who feel it know.
This peaceful calm within the breast
is the sure pledge of heavenly rest,
which for the Church of God remains,
the end of cares, the end of pains.
In holy duties, let the day,
in holy pleasures pass away;
how sweet a Sabbath thus to spend,
in hope of one that ne’er shall end.
Historical Notes
The first text above is Stennett's original, as best as I have been able to reconstruct it from various commentaries (stb+). Then follows the Episcopal version in the Prayer Book Collection and the 1874 Hymnal. Stennett was a Seventh-Day Baptist who advocated worship on the Sabbath (Saturday).
